Remembering the Fallen

This Remembrance Day, Canadians again will pause to honour the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. We owe these individuals an everlasting debt – one that can never be repaid.

As the people of Canada, we share a deep belief in our rights and freedoms and we treasure the shared values that we all enjoy. However, they did not happen without a price – a price paid on the fields of Flanders, in the towns of Europe, on the hills of Korea, and in the sands of Afghanistan. Canada and its soldiers were there. Many did not return.

Today marks the 101st anniversary of the poppy. It remains a symbol that we wear close to our hearts and is an unmistakable mark of remembrance. When we wear a poppy, we remember family members, friends, neighbours, and community members who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As someone who proudly serves in the Canadian Armed Forces, I know of the honour and privilege of serving our country. It is important for Canadians to let our service members know that we appreciate their efforts to maintain and defend our values.

On the 11th hour, on the 11th day, and on the 11th month, Canadians from coast to coast to coast will pay silent tribute to all of those who have fallen.

To the sailors, aviators, and soldiers who have loved our nation so selflessly, we remember you and we thank you.

Lest We Forget.
